Hybrid Vehicles

A hybrid car is one that uses more than one means of propulsion – that means combining a petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor.

Hybrid vehicles:

  • Consume less fuel
  • Emit less CO2 than a comparable conventional petrol or diesel-engine vehicle.

Hybrid owners may also get extra benefits due to lower CO2 emissions such as:

  • Lower first year road tax and company car tax
  • Avoids congestion charges.

Hybrid cars have a conventional engine, an electric motor and a battery. There are three different types of hybrids and each works in a different way:

Parallel Hybrid Cars

These are the most common type of hybrid. The Toyota Prius is the most widely known example. The car’s wheels can be powered in three different ways: either directly by the engine, by the electric motor alone, or by both power sources working together.

Range Extender Hybrid Cars

These only use their conventional engine to produce electricity for a generator that recharges the batteries. The engine never drives the car, it only produces energy for the electric motor.

The BMW i3 with Range Extender is one of the most popular examples. The Honda Jazz Hybrid also uses an electric motor to help their relatively small conventional engines when required.

Hybrids are also categorised as either strong or mild depending on the amount of battery power they have. With more battery capacity, strong hybrids can drive further than mild ones on electric power only.

Plug-in hybrid

As the name implies, this type of hybrid can be plugged into an electric outlet to recharge their batteries, as well as being charged on the move.

Effectively, they are a halfway house between conventional hybrids and full electric vehicles. Although they have a conventional engine, they also have larger batteries than regular hybrids and can drive longer distances on electric power alone – up to 30 miles in some cases.

Aircon Regas

There are 2 main types of refrigeration gasses available

R134a and R1234yf are similar, however, R1234yf was created as a more environmentally friendly replacement to R134a. The biggest difference between the two is that R1234yf is mildly flammable and does require special handling.

What’s the difference between R1234yf and R134a Refrigerant?

Did you know?

The Mobile Air Conditioning Systems (MAC) Directive introduced far greater focus on protecting the environment from greater climate damaging air conditioning system refrigerants.

A new more environmentally friendly vehicle air conditioning system refrigerant gas (known as R1234yf) has become widely used (instead of R134a) from the 1st January 2017 on passenger cars and Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs) up to 3.5 Tonnes.  For example, if R134a gas is released into the atmosphere, it has a lifespan of 13 years in comparison to just 11 days for R1234yf refrigerant.

R134a refrigerant gas was the most commonly used refrigerant gas by vehicle manufacturers in recent times up to 2017.  The MAC Directive only applies to new vehicles since the start of 2017, so all vehicles currently using R134a are still able to continue to use that refrigerant.

A number of vehicle manufacturers switched to R1234yf refrigerant gas before 2017, so now there are a mixture of vehicles on UK roads using either refrigerant gas.

Tyres

Tyres are the vehicles only point of contact with the road. Tyres treads are designed to pump water from the road surface and provide maximum grip and better brake performance. Tyre pressure affects safety by impacting car’s handling capability. Tyres not set to correct pressure, wear out faster. In order to achieve lower fuel bills, longer tyre life, increased safety and reduced emissions, check your tyre pressure once a month and before a long journey.

At The Mechanic tyres are fitted by trained professionals. The Mechanic supplies the best brands of tyres in all sizes. Our staff will provide you with all the required information about the relative tyre quality, fuel consumption, noise data and weather responsiveness.
